Church family,
What does it take for us to be the church? That is the question our summer series, What It Takes, is working through, one Sunday at a time. Not what it takes to run a church, but what it takes to be one, the people God is building. We started by asking what the church is. Yesterday, in Philippians 2, we asked how we build, and Paul’s answer runs backward to everything the world teaches. We build by going down.
The world hands its trophies to the people out front, the ones who make sure they are seen, and it forgets the ones down in the dirt doing the work. God keeps score the other way. Jesus was God, and he came all the way down: down to a manger, down to a servant’s towel, down to a cross, the lowest place there is. Because he went lowest, God raised him to the highest name there is. Down is the way up in the kingdom of God. So we stop competing, we count one another more important than ourselves, and we each pick up the towel with our name on it. That is how a church gets built, all of us down in the work together, not a faithful few while the rest watch from the stands.
Next Sunday brings week three, and it puts the question to us: what will it take? We will be in Philippians 2:12–18, where Paul moves from the cross to the everyday and lands on a line as plain as it is hard, do all things without complaining or grumbling. I am still sitting with it, but that is where what it takes to be the church gets real, down in how we treat each other day to day. Come Sunday and we will dig in together.
It is a full week ahead, and a good one. VBS starts Sunday night, and I want to see this whole church family in it.
In Christ, Pastor Garrison

For Our VBS Volunteers
The Plan for the Week
Thank you to everyone who came to the volunteer meeting Sunday. A few reminders. Your rooms are assigned, so decorate whenever it suits you this week. Come at 4:30 each night to set up and pray together before the doors open. Be here all four nights if you can. These kids latch onto a face, and it means something when it is the same face Monday through Wednesday. Read your night’s lesson before you come, wear your VBS shirt if you have one, and eat supper with us. If you still owe us a background check, let me know this week and we will get it done before Sunday. Questions go to me. Materials or reimbursement, see Jessica. Registration, check-in, and allergies, see Lisa Kiper at the table.
