Church family,
For four weeks we have been working through one question: what does it take for us to be the church? We asked what the church even is, and found it is the people Christ himself is building. We asked how we build, and found that we build low, the way Jesus did. We asked what it will take, and the answer came back every time as every one of us showing up to serve. Then Sunday we got to the question underneath all of it, the one plenty of us have turned over in a pew and never said out loud. Where do I fit?
Paul answers that one with a body. God baptized you into it. God placed you in it on purpose. God tied you to every other member of it. Your belonging here was never up for a vote, and the quiet gift nobody claps for was handed to you deliberately. Paul’s word for the parts we would rank at the bottom is indispensable. Christ keeps no spare parts.
A month of asking what it takes only counts for something if it ends with people taking a place. That is what Sunday is for.
At the end of the sermon I handed you three plain questions to help you discern where God may be calling you to serve. Sit with them this week.

What are you good at? Not what you wish you were good at. What has God already put in your hands? Here is a good way to check it: what do people around here keep thanking you for? The people around you usually spot a gift before the person carrying it does.
What do you love? What is the thing you would do in an ordinary week even if nobody paid you and nobody clapped, the work that gives you life instead of draining it?
Where do those two meet a need in this church? Right there, where what you are good at and what you love line up with something this body needs, is very likely the place God has been putting you all along.

The Ministry Fair will be set up in the mall all morning, before worship, between worship and Sunday School, and again after Sunday School. Every ministry of this church will have a table and somebody standing there who can tell you what it is and what it needs. Walk the whole thing. Ask questions. Find the table where your answers land, and put your name on it. If you have been waiting on somebody to come ask you, this is me asking.

Men’s Work Day at the Red Barn
Men, we need your hands. We are getting the Red Barn ready for our new Wednesday night group for 1st through 5th grade boys, launching in September. Think Boy Scouts for Jesus: fire building, knots, tools, Scripture, and men of this church teaching boys how to follow Jesus.
Bring work gloves. Come work.

Missionary Report, hosted by our WMU
A missionary report in the sanctuary at 5:30, with a reception to follow at 6:30 in the Family Life Center. This is a chance for the whole family to hear firsthand about the work we have been supporting overseas. Bring your kids. There will be plenty for them to see and hear.

Isaac Sharp’s Ordination
Isaac is ours. He grew up in this church family, and Hill Ridge is setting him apart for the work of ministry. Let’s fill that room with the people who have known him the longest. This is one of the milestones a man remembers for the rest of his life, and who is standing there matters.

Family worship starts next Wednesday, August 12. The missionary report takes the place of family worship this week, so August 12 is our first official family night: the whole church together, all ages, no dinner and no classes.
Full programming begins in September: supper at 6:00, then classes for every age, Adult Bible Study (Nine Marks of a Healthy Church, taught by Pastor Garrison), Youth Group, Elementary, our new Young Men’s Group for 1st through 5th grade boys, and PreK and nursery. Come hungry, and bring the kids.
